Mental Health and Well-being

At Scunthorpe Church of England Primary School, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff. We know that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable and at times, anyone may need additional emotional support. We take the view that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.

At our school, we promote a well-being and a mentally healthy environment through:

  • Promoting our school values and encouraging a sense of belonging
  • Promoting pupil voice and opportunities to participate in decision-making
  • Celebrating academic and non-academic achievements in order to promote self-esteem
  • Having designated Mental Health Champions
  • Providing opportunities for everyone to shine
  • Providing opportunities and places to reflect, connect and be still
  • Helping children to understand their emotions and feelings better and to feel comfortable sharing any concerns or worries
  • Helping children to develop emotional resilience and to manage setbacks
  • Have regular well-being days which enable children to reset

Well- being afternoons

We know that screen time and being in continued formal lessons is not always conducive to good mental health, and it is really important to give children opportunities to take time out and enjoy different learning activities which might help with developing mindfulness, relaxation, resilience or talking time. All of these things are good for children’s mental health and well-being. We have introduced half termly ‘Well-being afternoons’ which are carefully planned with a clear focus.

Below is our Mental Health Champions, who are trained to support our pupils with the mental health and well-being
